Avril is a Scottish artist who has lived and worked in Canterbury since returning from Africa in the 1980’s. She lived and worked first in South Africa, Nigeria and then Kenya for over 20 years and many of her paintings of architecture and archaeology reflect the colours of Africa and of her time spent on that wonderful continent and the many return visits to Kenya over the years.
On return to the UK Avril studied for a BA (Hons) Fine Art followed a few years later with an MA in Fine Art at the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Canterbury, now known as UCA.
She works across all mediums including encaustic (an oil and hot wax process). Her work is mostly painted in a large series of abstracted paintings of architecture, landscape or archaeology. Most notably her ‘Africa Series’, the ‘Cissbury Series’ (a large collection of paintings from the Neolithic Flint Mines in the interior of the Iron Age Hillfort, The Cissbury Ring in Sussex), the ‘Vessel Series’ and the ‘Dungeness Series’.
Avril has shown work in solo and group exhibitions in Kenya, Scotland and in Kent. Her work is in private collections in Europe, USA and Africa.
Avril is the Hon. Chairman of the East Kent Art Society.
