I have been a teacher and lecturer for over forty years and taught in secondary schools in Thanet as well as Special Needs establishments and have run art classes for adults over the past fifteen years. Now I run a group online with instruction sheets on a fortnightly basis throughout the year after giving up live lessons at Wingham and Littlebourne just pre the pandemic of 2019.
Having worked after leaving Canterbury College of Art in the early 1950s in the printing and allied trades this gave me an understanding of different printing and binding processes. I attended Sittingbourne College of Education (London University) and became a Geography teacher then specialising in Humanities: Art, Music, History and Design Technology and subsequently attended Canterbury Christ Church University to study Special Needs part time.
Having painted and drawn all my life this led to the enjoyment of the teaching of art in all environments especially where this facilitated the art education of children and latterly adults.
I was chairman of the East Kent Art Society for 24 years. In 2002, to celebrate the previous year’s Millennium, I wrote an illustrated History of the Society. I stepped down from both the Committee and Chairman in June 2024, partly to allow way for new and fresh ideas in the running of the Society and to pursue a number of personal projects.
I am mostly interested in the local environment of Kent and its changing light, shadow and colour and prefer to give a painterly impressionistic style to my images but having an interest in Plein Air work from which I produce paintings and study works from my garden Studio in my home at Margate a town with a burgeoning Artistic community centred on the Turner Centre and Margate’s Old Town. I work in most mediums: Watercolour, Acrylics, water - based Oils, Soft Pastels and Pencil Crayon in an extensive variety of styles.
Most of my work is available from my home and studio but as well as joint exhibitions including the EKAS at its base, St Mary’s Arts Centre in Sandwich but I have taken part in the past in exhibitions at the Mall Galleries and the Barbican Library Gallery, London, local Library and Private Galleries etc. Although I prefer a traditional approach I produce an eclectic variety of work as one would expect of a Tutor. However, I was involved actively in some contemporary installation work at St. Mary’s Church, Wingham (2011) and when I was the Director of art during the Ramsgate Spring Festival in the late 80s - early 90s. I held a Retrospective Exhibition at St. Mary’s Arts Centre where I celebrated 70 Years of painting and artistic endeavour.
