Hubert Pragnell

I was born in London in 1942 and from school went to study fine art first at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art. Here I took the intermediate examination in arts and crafts before winning a major county scholarship to study at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford. Here I took the University of Oxford Certificate in Fine Art, and the National Diploma in design (Fine Art). I then took a postgraduate diploma education at the University of Reading. I subsequently took an MA in History at the University of Kent and currently completing a Ph.D at the University of York in the field of railway architecture & history. Since 2003 I have been a part-time tutor in history of art & architecture for the University of Oxford Department for Continuing Education, & a member of Kellogg College.

My main interest is landscape and architectural subjects and my preferred medium is watercolour, ink and wash, and pastel although I do occasionally paint in oil. I taught art for a number of years at schools including Stonyhurst College, Lancashire, and The Crypt Grammar School Gloucester, before coming to The King’s School, Canterbury to teach primarily History of Art, although I also taught pupils landscape and architectural drawing & painting. Former pupils include Benjamin Mowll (Royal Society of Marine painters); Edmund de Waal (potter).

I first exhibited an etching at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1960 and have exhibited with the Royal institute of Painters in Watercolour at the Mall Gallery. I have exhibited at a number of venues including London, Oxford and Canterbury; several times in exhibitions arranged to fun-raise for Canterbury Cathedral. A number of my works have been sold to America, Canada and mainland Europe. I have been a member of the East Kent Art Society for about twenty years.
