Background
Kevin is a self-taught sea and landscape artist, who has lived in East Kent since 1991. He works in mixed media but mainly in gel based acrylics. These have a consistency and fluidity that allows them to be mixed and worked directly onto the painted surface.
Kevin paints mainly seascapes and tidal rivers, exploring the ways in which tidal waters mark the passage of time such as by ebbing and flowing, by shifting the shore line, by rising and falling against objects of interest, and by eroding and wearing down. His works are contemplative and he uses composition and perspective to engage the viewer.
Inspiration
William Turner 1775-1851 (whose earliest abstractions of light predated impressionist, expressionist and abstract art)
Peder Balke 1804-1887 (whose works include en plein air seascapes from north of the Arctic Circle)
Isaac Levitan 1860-1900 (for rising above intense personal hardship to create sublime and beautifully composed landscapes)
