After a period working in the Silk Screen Printing industry Tom Bowling attended Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and went on to The Royal Academy School of Painting where he gained a David MurrayTravelling Scholarship for landscape painting and two Landseer Scholarships.
He subsequently trained as a teacher and worked in schools in Bournemouth and East Sussex as a Head of Art. In 1979 he commenced working at Thanet College where he remained for the next 27 years running a variety of art and media courses at different levels.
After leaving the college he worked as an quality inspector/advisor for Edexcel visiting many schools and colleges running BTEC courses mainly in the South East and the Eastern Region.
Throughout his teaching career Tom has continued to produce art work although this has often been limited to drawings in a range of graphic media. His first love was water-colour but now he often works in acrylic and oil paint. His paintings have involved experimenting with a wide variety of styles and approaches ranging from the completely abstract to more figurative work inspired by the Thanet coast. He has participated in group exhibitions in Dorset, East Sussex and Kent and often submits to National Open Exhibitions (such as those run by the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Pastel Society and The Royal Water colour Society) and his work has been short listed and hung.
As well as exhibiting regularly with the East Kent Art Society Tom was formerly a founder member of the Isle of Thanet Arts Charity (IOTA) with which he exhibited and helped organize a wide range of creative and educational events in the local area.
